Only a few years after purchasing their own property, the church experienced a major setback - fire. The building burned on Sunday, March 15th, 1970. The firemen were only able to save the old gymnasium building adjacent to the church. It is believed that the fire was started by a wood burning furnace which was warming the building for the Sunday service. Below is an article out of The Daily News Newspaper:
After the fire, Sunday School and church services were held in the basement of the gymnasium building. Before the fire, the church had used the gym for playing basketball and other games.
Mrs. Englert continues: "With the accompanying pictures (above), one can see the condition of the gymnasium at that time. With much time, effort, and money, it is as you see it today (May 2001)."
Mrs. Englert can't remember for sure, but she believes the church sold some of the property on the west side of the buildings in order to raise enough money to convert the old gymnasium into a church. After much work, the gym was converted to include a sanctuary and four classrooms upstairs as well as a kitchen, dining area, and restrooms in the basement.
